Our School

Learn about TAF Academy’s approach to learning and why our students excel, consistently.

Our School

Established in 2008, TAF Academy is a 6th-12th grade STEM-focused neighborhood public school that is co-managed by Federal Way Public Schools and Technology Access Foundation (TAF). We provide a rigorous and relevant learning environment rooted in project-based learning practices for today’s college-bound student.

There are no barriers to entry or retention. Our small, public school setting reflects what researchers know about small schools—that they tend to positively impact student achievement, behavior and attendance.

In just eight years of operation, TAF Academy has garnered attention on both district and national levels. We have won numerous state and national awards for excellence and innovation. In fact, 2016 marks the fifth year in a row of receiving the School of Distinction Award for our continuous and sustained improvement in English Language Arts and Math over a five-year period.

Our Mission

TAF Academy’s mission is to prepare every student for college and for life through a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused curriculum. Our goal is to enlist students as active participants in their education and help them cultivate a keen awareness of their important role in the world.

Our Vision

Students will learn to succeed–not for standards or teacher expectations, not to compete in the workforce and fuel the economy, not for personal gain and prestige–but so they can position themselves to create the world they envision, personally, communally, nationally and globally.

Our Students

TAF Academy is proud to serve a diverse student body. We hold high expectations for each student and personalize support for them to be college-ready by graduation.

Currently, 95% of TAF Academy students graduate on-time. Of those, 100% are accepted into college.

We offer innovative programs and opportunities for our students. In addition to traditional curriculum, throughout the school year students are presented with varying opportunities to immerse themselves in STEM fields. Programs like the Fred Hutch internship program, special innovation challenges by Comcast and Expedia/Coding Dojo, involvement in the FabLab, and many others.

Our students are primed to become confident, thoughtful, and innovative leaders. They are equipped to leave the academy with the tools needed to create the future they envision, both personally and globally.

Over 73% of our teachers hold Master’s Degrees and 93.9% of our classes are taught by teachers considered “highly qualified” by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

We want our teachers to not only provide rigorous instruction, but also to connect to our students on a personal level. Trained through TAF’s STEMbyTAF instructional model, both the teacher and students work collaboratively to create learning environments and opportunities that promote self-discovery, student interests, and knowledge retention.
